Great Wave Off Kanagawa (2024) The original, “Great Wave Off Kanagawa” artwork was created by the renowned Japanese woodblock print artist Hokusai in 1831.
The 1977 recreation mural was created on the exterior wall of Childhoods End Gallery in Olympia, Washington (corner of Water Street and Fourth Avenue West) by Joe Tougas and friends.
Then the 2024 restoration was carefully done by Asian American artist Austin Michael Davis as guided by artist Joe Tougas. This restoration was funded in partnership between Rainbow and the Olympia Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. Once completed, this mural was rededicated to the Japanese American community in an act of artistic restorative justice providing a visual restoration of one the local cultural communities historically erased.
